Use these five simple tricks in any combination to bring new life to your decorating scheme without spending a lot of money or time.
Looking to spruce up your décor in an inexpensive and easy way? The easiest way to add a little oomph is by referring to your decorating plan.
- Paint colors. Ask your paint supplier what colors were designed by the manufacturer to work with your room color. Select one or two of these colors and add some interest in creative ways. Paint stripes, add an accent wall, paint furniture pieces, pots for plants, picture frames, anything you can come up with that will add a little excitement.
- Repeat Fabrics. If you’ve made your own curtains or pillows and your fabric is still in store then you’re lucky, go buy fabrics in the same family and add some interest in matching but contrasting fabrics. Recover seat cushions, make a valance, create some sheers for your windows, sew a few throw pillows, or cover an artist’s canvas and create a unique focal point.
- Collections. Do you have something you like collecting? Why not put it on display for a while? Frame stamp collections, coin collections, scrapbook pages. If you collect trinkets, find a way to display them, either together or scattered about. Let your personality shine through with your personal favorite items. And if you already have a favorite collection on display, consider taking it down for a while and trying something new.
- Update. If your decorating scheme is outdated, you can make some simple changes that keep things a little fresh and new. This may include adding new fabrics, new paint colors or new accessories. You don’t have to revamp the entire room to give it a new feel; just twist the focus away from old pieces and onto new additions.
- Hit the Storage. One great way to make your old decorating new is by returning to even older decorating favorites. Most people have a hard time throwing away old beloved pieces, so when it's time to retire them they move them into storage. Given enough time these pieces can become retro-chic or you may now see a way to repurpose them so they can once again be functional.
Like all decorating projects, you can spend as little or as much time and money as you want. Obviously, the more changes you make the more dramatic the result will be, but that doesn’t mean you have to spend a lot of time or money making these changes. Likewise, if you buy a very, very expensive piece and add it to your room it may not make much of a change at all. Creating a new look is all about the big picture.
